How to Improve Your Digital Camera Shots

Reader Mindi writes: I'm not a professional, I just love taking pictures. I'm beginning an eBay business, and my pictures don't always come out sharp, crisp, or clear. They are really fuzzy and have a yellow tint to them. Can you give me any hints to help me out?

Digital cameras offer amazing convenience and flexibility, but less expensive models often take less-than-stellar photographs. However, a few simple tips can help improve photographs immeasurably. Here's what I do to get the (mostly) perfect shot every time.

  • First, understand the focus system of your camera. Virtually every camera focuses when you press the shutter button halfway down. You'll usually hear a beep and see a green square on the preview screen. This is what the camera is focusing on. Then press the button the rest of the way down to take the picture. Ignoring this middle step usually results in a blurry shot.
  • Stability is key. Any movement during a shot will almost always render that shot useless, which is why more and more cameras are adding "image stabilization" technology. Use a tripod, a sandbag, or just brace your arm against something solid. Use two hands to hold the camera. Those one-handed snapshots never turn out. If you're shooting products for eBay, there's no reason not to use a tripod.
  • Backlighting is your enemy. So many people try to shoot a photo with a bright window in the background, then wonder why the shot didn't come out. It's no mystery: Bright light floods the lens, and your camera usually can't compensate for it. If you must shoot into the light, turn on the flash.
  • For my first shot in a new environment, I turn the flash OFF, whether I'm inside or outside. The camera responds much more quickly without the flash, and many cams perform well in low light. If the shot looks at all blurry on the preview, I turn the flash on and try again.
  • Remember, digital memory is cheap and easily erased. Experiment until you find a setting that works or a trick that eliminates the blur.

Those tips should help you get better shots, at the very least avoiding blurry or fuzzy images. As for your yellow tint problem, that's a new one to me, but it could be caused by the lighting in your room (try incandescent bulbs if you have fluorescents) or by a problem with the camera. Again, trial and error is your friend here, but perhaps I could throw this one to the readers, in case someone out there has had a similar problem. Have at it!

Digital Camera HQ's 2008 Holiday Gift Guide: Best Cutting-Edge Cameras

These cameras have all sorts of unique features that represent new ideas and innovations in digital cameras. Check out what these cutting-edge cameras can offer and see if it's the kind of thing that might suit you.

Digital Camera with Integrated GPS

Nikon P6000

from $409.00

The Nikon Coolpix P6000 is one of the first cameras to have integrated GPS, meaning you can tag your photos with their exact geographical location as you shoot them. Geotagging is something of a fad, but if you're interested in pinpoint accurate information about where and when you took a photograph, the Nikon P6000 has you covered. It's a very interesting concept, but even if you're not keen on the GPS, the P6000 also has a remarkable 13-megapixel sensor to keep you happy.

Part Camera, Part Photo Album

Sony T700

from $348.00

The Sony Cybershot T700 is a very welcome upgrade on a poorly received concept camera Sony debuted a year ago, the Cybershot G1. Everything that was wrong about the G1 has been fixed, and the T700 perfects the camera-as-photo-album concept quite nicely. The T700 is, first and foremost, an excellent 10-megapixel ultracompact camera, with an above-average 4x optical zoom. Despite being extremely slim and portable, Sony has packed 4GB of internal memory into the T700, so you never have to worry about running out of room for photos. The 3.5-inch LCD makes viewing your photographs easy and comfortable.

E-Mail Photos Right From the Camera!

Nikon S610c

from $265.00

The Nikon Coolpix S610c continues that brand's steady march toward wireless. Like the S52c before it, the S610c allows users to transfer their photos to their computer via Wi-Fi connection, and to immediately e-mail photos from their camera to friends over the Internet whenever there is a connection available. Though Nikon is still including Wi-Fi capabilities as an alternative option to their traditional cameras, the technology works so well it's a wonder that they don't make it a standard feature in all their models. Until then, the S610c is the perfect blend of high-quality point-and-shoot photography and futuristic wireless photo transfer.

Canon EOS 5D Mk. II

Compact, lightweight with environmental protection, EOS 5D successor boasts a newly designed Canon CMOS sensor, with ISO sensitivity up to 25,600 for shooting in near dark conditions. The new DIGIC 4 processor combines with the improved CMOS sensor to deliver medium format territory image quality at 3.9 frames per second, for up to 310 frames.

Triggered from Live View Mode, HD video capture allows users to shoot uninterrupted at full 1080 resolution at 30fps -- for amazing quality footage with outstanding levels of detail and realism.

The integration of HD movie capability into a high-end 21.1-megapixel camera opens a multitude of new possibilities for photojournalists and news photographers. With its full-frame CMOS sensor and outstanding ISO performance, the EOS 5D Mark II will appeal to any photographer in search of the finest camera equipment available -- from studio and wedding to nature and travel photographers.

Other improvements to the EOS 5D include:

  • Addition of Canon’s EOS Integrated Cleaning System, with a new Fluorine coating on the low-pass filter
  • Larger 3.0-inch Clear View LCD with VGA resolution, a 170-degree angle of view and anti-reflective coatings
  • Improved menu system including Quick Control Screen for more direct access to common settings
  • Automatic peripheral illumination correction, utilizing detailed EF lens information to optimize JPEG images straight out of the camera
  • Magnesium alloy construction with additional environmental protection
  • UDMA memory card compatibility
EOS 5D Mark II Highlights

New CMOS sensor
The EOS 5D Mark II’s newly designed full-frame 21.1-megapixel CMOS sensor features ISO sensitivity from 100-6400, expandable to 50, 12,800 and 25,600. Large 6.4µm2 pixels have been redesigned to capture more light and yield a better signal to noise ratio to ensure lower noise images throughout the ISO range. The full frame sensor has the same dimensions as a frame of 35mm film. This means that wide-angle lenses stay wide, without the change in angle of view associated with smaller sensor cameras. As well as benefiting from finer control over depth of field, photographers moving up to the EOS 5D Mark II’s full frame format will find the newly designed wide, bright 98 percent coverage viewfinder on a joy to work with.

New DIGIC 4 processor
A new DIGIC 4 processor combined with 14-bit analogue to digital conversion provides smooth gradations in mono-tonal areas such as skies, and highly accurate color rendition. As well as HD movie shooting, DIGIC 4’s high speed provides for long uninterrupted continuous bursts of large JPEGs, near-instant start-up times and immediate and fast review after shooting. DIGIC 4 also provides for improved noise reduction algorithms, complementing the already low-noise images from the EOS 5D Mark II’s CMOS sensor.

HD video capture
The EOS 5D Mark II is Canon’s first DSLR to incorporate full HD 1920x1080 video capture. Once filming is started from Live View mode, photographers can fire off either single of continuous stills, with video capture continuing after the final frame is captured.

See everything
A new 3.0-inch VGA resolution LCD provides a wide 170 degree angle-of-view, providing plenty of clarity for accurate focus checks in playback. The screen brightness can automatically adjust to suit viewing conditions, extending battery life in low light and improving viewing in bright conditions. A new dedicated Live View button switches modes to display a real-time image on the LCD. This allows EOS 5D Mark II photographers to enjoy simplified shooting from awkward angles. Simple connection to a PC provides easy remote shooting.

Precision focus and metering
A 9-point auto focus system is supported by 6 additional invisible Assist AF points, located inside the spot-metering circle to optimise subject tracking performance in AI SERVO AF mode. For accurate exposure readings in tricky lighting conditions, the spot metering circle covers just 3.5 percent of the frame.

Control
The EOS 5D Mark II’s redesigned menu system includes a new Quick Control screen, for instant access to the most commonly changed settings. A new Creative Auto mode allows photographers to cede control of key settings to the camera, while retaining control over creative variables such background blur, drive mode and image brightness. Custom user settings allow photographers to switch between two completely different camera setups. This is ideal for changing quickly between two different environments, such as switching from working inside a church without flash to outdoors with fill-flash at a wedding.

Optional Accessories
Shooting flexibility is enhanced with a range of new accessories. Shooting capacity can be extended with either the high-capacity 1800mAh lithium-ion Battery Pack LP-E6, or Battery Grip BG-E6.

A new optional Wireless File Transmitter
The WFT-E4 offers external HDD and GPS compatibility along with ability to transmit images direct to computer or FTP server, or operate the camera wirelessly. Both the BG-E6 and WFT-E4 feature a vertical orientation shutter release and other key controls for comfortable portraiture work, with a substantial grip to help balance the camera when used with long lenses.

Adding to this AF performance, the EOS 50D incorporates a diagonally mounted cross-type sensor that is sensitive to both vertical and horizontal lines at f/2.8, perfect for enhanced operation in dim light. The EOS 50D has a number of focus modes, including One-Shot AF, AI Focus AF and AI Servo AF.

New Lens Peripheral Illumination Correction setting
Canon’s exclusive Lens Peripheral Illumination setting takes into account any light falloff in the corners of the frame and corrects it, making for a perfectly exposed image. Correction data are detected automatically on a number of Canon EF lenses and can be entered manually through included the Canon EOS Utility software.

Updated EOS Integrated Cleaning System
The EOS 50D’s Self Cleaning Sensor Unit eliminates stray dust that enters the camera when changing a lens or when out in the field. The sensor’s IR-cut/Low-pass filter cleans itself automatically with ultrasonic vibrations every time the camera is turned on or off and features a new flourine coating to minimize dust adhesion. Dust missed by the cleaning unit is captured by Canon’s Dust Delete Data Detection software and can be erased from the image file.

Self Cleaning Sensor Unit
Self Cleaning Sensor Unit
A key element of minimizing dust is preventing it from clinging to the front surface of the imaging sensor. To combat this, the EOS 50D features a Canon-designed Self Cleaning Sensor Unit. The low-pass filter at the front of the sensor shakes off dust automatically with ultrasonic vibrations, removing dust from the sensor assembly. The EOS 50D also has a coating on the front surface of the low-pass filter, to increase its resistance to dust sticking to the sensor.

Canon EOS 50D digital SLR highlights
Dust Delete Data Detection

Dust that may still remain on the front of the sensor can also be erased with software included in Digital Photo Professional (DPP) Version 3.3 or later software. A simple test shot of a plain, white object can be taken, using a menu setting. This Dust Delete Data image is analyzed in-camera, and the location and size of any remaining dust is added to any subsequent pictures taken. This data is transmitted along with the image, whether JPEG or RAW, and can be either manually or automatically erased in Canon’s DPP software. This added software option ensures the cleanest possible image, perfect for printing or archiving.

Creative Auto goes a step beyond full auto with on screen setting display The EOS 50D has a new Creative Auto mode and a quick control screen that helps novice users narrow the gap between fully automatic and manual control. While the camera will remain by default in fully automatic mode, frequently changed settings like flash, exposure compensation, image quality and more are all accessible through one easy screen interface designed for intuitive, quick action. A provided shooting guide serves as a quick-reference for on-the-fly operation.

HDMI output for displaying full high-resolution images on a HDTV The EOS 50D includes a new HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) output device that enables High Definition display of your photographs on any HDTV with HDMI ports. It’s remarkable to behold the details of your photographs in Full HD, and it’s easy with the EOS 50D. Resolution is set automatically to match the TV to which you’ve connected, and images are displayed in a full-frame 3:2 ratio with blacked out bars to the left and right of the image.

Compatible with over 60 Canon EF/EF-S lenses and most EOS System accessories

EF & EF-S Lenses
The EOS 50D is compatible with all Canon lenses in the EF and EF-S lineup, ranging from ultra-wide angle to super telephoto lenses. Canon lenses employ advanced optical expertise and micron-precision engineering to deliver unprecedented performance in all facets of the photographic process. Special optical technologies, such as Aspherical, ultra-low dispersion, or fluorite elements are featured in the universally acclaimed L-series lenses. And Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer technology is featured in select lenses to minimize the effect of camera shake. Through Canon lenses, photographers can truly maximize the quality and liberating performance of the EOS 50D.

Flash Photography
The EOS 50D features the acclaimed E-TTL II flash metering system. With any of the flashes in the EX Speedlite line, E-TTL II provides reliable flash output whether shooting fill-in flash pictures in sunlight, or using flash in total darkness. With E-TTL II, the exact same 35-zone metering sensor used for measuring ambient light is also used for flash metering--giving even finer metering command of the image area. If you prefer a broader area for flash metering, there's a menu setting to change to "Average" flash metering--where the entire 35-zone area is measured evenly for flash exposure.

Small and speedy cameras

Everyone's looking for a point-and-shoot camera fast enough to catch Sally making the winning goal or Fido catching a Frisbee in midair. There are two main factors that impact your camera's speed: the time it takes to lock focus, which affects how fast the camera captures an image after you press the shutter button; and processing and write speeds, which affect how fast you can shoot the next image after you've just taken a picture. In our reviews, we refer to the first factor as shutter lag and measure it in both high-contrast and low-contrast situations. We call the second factor shot-to-shot time. Here are five of the fastest we've seen, with shot-to-shot times (in good light) of 1.5 seconds or less and shutter lags of 0.5 second or shorter in high-contrast conditions and 1.2 seconds or less in dim conditions.
